DarkCoast and Black Rice Productions’ latest film, DEAD SQUAD: TEMPLE OF THE UNDEAD, follows a group of teenagers on a tropical vacation that stumble upon a hidden jungle temple. The friends’ getaway vacation in paradise turns gory, mysterious and frightening experience when they realize that the long-lost ruin isn’t abandoned, but instead, home to the undead and mysterious monsters of zombies.

Full of zombie blood-splatter, DEAD SQUAD is based on real events from the Nazi/CIA underground facilities for experimentations, which was originally responsible for creating and unleashing zombie hordes to invade the world. After World War II, a secret military program known as “Operation Paperclip” recruited over 1500 former Nazi scientists. Sending them to America to continue their work, the scientists were given new identities, with false employment records and political backgrounds. In 1953, the CIA initiated “Project MK-ULTRA”, which involved using unwilling human-subjects as lab rats, located in secret, faraway places.

Seemingly a standard zombie film, a particular group argues that Dominik Hauser’s directorial debut DEAD SQUAD carries a deeper meaning, and perhaps even major cultural significance regarding this group of zombies. Samantha, who has been undead since the ‘80s, said that zombies have an entire culture that goes unperceived by humans. “Zombie culture and society very rich,” said Samantha, adding, “Human culture and human movie only stoke flame of prejudice against zombie.”

“Zombie very maligned in movie,” said Greg, another recently revived zombie. “Zombie killed with gun, zombie killed with chainsaw, zombie even killed with showerhead! It perfect time for zombie to have voice – voice that say more than just ‘brains’!”

It is in this spirit that the zombies of DEAD SQUAD have banded together and created a movement set to give zombies the true representation they have always deserved – and this movement starts with their new hashtag, #ZToo. DarkCoast hopes that fans of zombie films will finally acknowledge the troubles zombies have faced throughout the decades. The campaign itself will involve the hashtag, as well as relevant posts and promotional art mirroring recent socio-political campaigns on social media such as Twitter or Facebook.

“The hashtag adds legitimacy to movement,” said Samantha. “It can create traction on social media platforms and start conversation and fruitful debate.”

The zombies of DEAD SQUAD hope that the plight of the zombie-kind can finally be given its dues, so that zombies can finally live side-by-side and in harmony with the people that have hurt them for so long. “If nothing else work, we bite human heads off,” concluded Greg.
